PADI Open Water Course at the Similan Islands
Learn to dive with us at Thailand’s best scuba diving location. The PADI Open Water course is the entry level course for those wishing to become scuba divers. Completion of the course allows you to dive anywhere in the world, with a buddy, to a depth of 18 metres. PADI is the largest and most recognized diver training organization in the world.

This course includes swimming pool training, dive theory study, and open water dives at the Similan Islands.
Swimming pool training (confined water training) is required before going into open water. During pool training you will be under close supervision of our instructors as you learn important skills required for safe diving. Pool training for this course takes place at a specially designed facility with a 4.5 meter deep pool.
Dive theory is a necessary part of the course which is done in a fun, relaxed environment with the aid of videos, interactive computer software, discussions, and scuba diving equipment. Subjects covered in dive theory include basic physics, physiology, dive equipment, the ocean environment, and brief history of diving.
Similan Islands Dives
Open water dives take place in the Similan islands national park onboard a modern liveaboard dive boat. The liveaboard moves around various locations suitable for beginner divers. You can either stay overnight on the liveaboard, or take 2 day trips. The 2 day trip option appeals to those who already have pre-booked accommodation.Transfers to the liveaboard are made by speedboat from Taplamu pier in Khao Lak.
When can I take this course?
The Similan Islands national park is open from the middle of October until the middle of May. This open water course is available from November 1st until April 30th.
How long does it take?
The PADI Open Water Course takes 3-4 days to complete. For a more relaxed experience we recommend 4 days but if you are short on time then it can be completed in 3 days. The theory section can be completed online before you arrive to Thailand by taking the PADI e-learning option, with e-learning the course takes 3 days.
Who will be my Instructors?
We use our own PADI instructors for all of our scuba diving courses. Using our in-house instructors ensures high standards are maintained throughout your time with us. We only teach small or private groups which means a more personalized experience with great customer service. We will take great care of you from the moment you arrive until the moment you head off to your next destination.
Who can take a PADI Open Water Course?
The minimum age for the PADI Open Water Course is 15. Junior Open Water courses are available for 10-14 year olds, junior courses follow a similar schedule but with some differences such as shallower depth limits.
To complete the PADI Open Water Course you need to be comfortable in the water and have basic swimming skills. Before any confined water and open water dives you will be required to complete a PADI medical statement. The medical statement is important as it will identify any conditions that may be affected by diving. If any of the conditions apply to you, you will need to be cleared by a physician before participating in any diving activities.
Pool training takes place in Khao Lak which is in Phang Nga province in southern Thailand.
Open water training takes place at the Similan Islands. The Similan Islands are reached in 1 hour and 15 minutes by speedboat from Taplamu pier in Khao Lak.
The nearest airport to Khao Lak is in Phuket which can be reached in 1 hour by minivan transfer. We can arrange air conditioned minivan transfers from either Phuket airport or any of the tourist towns such as Patong, Karen, or Kata.

Khao Lak Accommodation
Khao Lak is the best place to base yourself whilst taking this course or any diving activities at the Similan Islands. Khao Lak is a small beach town 1 hours drive north from Phuket airport.
The town itself is quite small but Khao Lak has very long stretches of beach with all kinds of accommodation options from budget guest houses to 5 star luxury resorts.
